I come from a small family but I love them fiercely. And a love of music has always been a part of that family, even though any talent for performing music seems to have been lost somewhere along the way in my ancestry. As a teen, I decided on announcing as a career because I believed it would allow me to indulge in my first love without me being forced to actually work. Because, of course, announcers don’t really work, do they? A four-hour workday at the most and I would spend that entire time in a room surrounded by music?! What could be better than that? I laugh at my teenaged self now because announcing has brought some of the most difficult things with which I’ve had to deal!

However, it truly has been a rewarding, affirming, and surprising career. I have been announcing for just over five years now. I spent quite some time doing broadcasting courses trying to learn what this business is all about and what would be expected of me, but you can only learn so much without actually working in “the belly of the beast.” I still felt completely unprepared when, after two months as a relief announcer at The Best Mix 95.1FM, I was given my own shift on a Saturday night. I was and am so grateful for their faith and trust in me, though, because I felt obligated to do my best to make the shift – and my others during my five years there – a success.

That pattern of hard work follows me now at Heartbeat Radio, a station whose listeners are more than listeners; they are participants, close family members, who seem as though they would be as lost without us as we would be without them. Needless to say, I have been enjoying the opportunity to play – and listen to – music from each decade that can signify so many different things to each individual. And it is wonderful to be a part of a station that attempts to live what it preaches: kindness, thoughtfulness, peace, love, professionalism.

It has been a fun ride and I think I will keep on with it as long as I can!
